Wisdom Teeth Removal

What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Typically appearing when patients are between the ages of 16 and 20, third molars or wisdom teeth are the last four teeth to erupt (come through the gums). Not everyone will develop third molars, but those patients who do will sometimes feel pain or pressure in the back of their mouth. This pain is typically experienced when a third molar partially erupts at an angle and there is insufficient room for the tooth, resulting in an “impacted” tooth.

Untreated impacted wisdom teeth can cause pain, periodontal disease, infection, or further dental and oral health complications. In cases like these, it is often best to remove the wisdom tooth or teeth. Sometimes wisdom teeth can contribute to cavities on neighboring teeth.

At A Glowing Smile Dental Care, we offer safe and painless removal of your wisdom teeth. Dr. Dicello is a highly skilled dentist and has performed hundreds of third molar extractions during the course of his career. He dedicates an entire day, twice a month, solely to these types of extractions.

What Can I Expect During My Wisdom Teeth Extraction?

Before removing your wisdom teeth, our team of professionals will perform x-rays and a dental exam to determine if wisdom tooth removal is right for you. Some patients are anxious about third molar extractions—that’s okay and normal!  Once it is established that your third molars should be extracted, Dr. Dicello will go over the procedure and answer any questions or concerns that you may have.

Removal of your wisdom teeth at our Peoria location is an outpatient procedure, meaning the surgery will be done at our office and you will be able to go home following treatment. Dr. Dicello will administer a local anesthetic so that you will be awake, but completely comfortable. Every patient is different, but many times Dr. Dicello is able to remove the tooth in minutes. Depending on your case, your extraction may take a little longer.

Post-Treatment Follow-Up

Following the extraction, Dr. Dicello will prescribe appropriate medication so that you can get back to your normal routine as soon as possible. You will be sent home with post-operative instructions that Dr. Dicello will discuss with you before the extraction is performed.

After the procedure, you can expect some swelling and bruising on your cheeks - this is normal and typically subsides within a few days. If your teenager is in school on the day of the extraction, we will provide an excused-absence letter so that your teen may rest for the remainder of the day. Dr. Dicello always personally follows up with his third-molar removal patients, so you can expect a call from him within 24 hours of the extraction.
